FAQ

Can Bean still be unlocked after the 1.0.5 shortcut patch?
Yes. Players have reported legitimate sub-hour completions on later versions by clearing all five islands in order on Easy. The old route that sailed directly to Volcano before unlocking it was patched and should not be used.
Does Easy difficulty disable Bean?
Current community reports and the current Mobalytics route say Easy difficulty still awards Bean. Because difficulty behavior can change, verify the current patch before committing to a long practice session.

How do you unlock Bean in How to Fish?

Start a new save, select Easy, and complete the entire story in under 60 minutes. “Finish” means more than defeating the Mutated Bowhead Whale: return its trophy to the scientist, take the RHIB keys, enter the military boat, and use the steering wheel before the timer expires.

Steam’s global statistics showed only 2.6% of players had Bean on September 1, 2026, making it the rarest achievement at the time checked. The percentage will change as more players finish the game.

What should you do before starting the timer?

Complete one relaxed playthrough first. Practice the quest-object hand-ins, boss summons, boat landings, and final RHIB sequence on your normal save. Read the beginner route, learn the boss fights, and choose a minimal path through the weapon guide.

The old community shortcut that sailed directly to Volcano was removed in version 1.0.5. A later Steam discussion reports legitimate runs around 40–55 minutes by visiting every island normally, so route knowledge matters more than a patched skip.

What is the safest sub-hour route?

  1. Lighthouse: finish the tutorial, summon the Spider Crab, return its trophy, and take the boat keys.
  2. Forest: collect three Leeches, defeat the Giant Piranha, return its trophy, and buy only the upgrades needed to keep moving.
  3. Desert: complete the tourist request, defeat the island boss, and avoid optional grill or collection detours.
  4. Rocks: summon the Tuna, use it to start the Albatross fight, and turn in the bird’s trophy.
  5. Volcano: give the scientist five fish, defeat the Bowhead Whale, throw it into the volcano, defeat the Mutated Bowhead Whale, and complete the RHIB ending.

Use dynamite for quick food collection when it saves time, but do not rely on self-damaging combat tricks. Keep the next quest item in a known inventory slot and sail onward as soon as each hand-in completes.

What should you buy during a Bean run?

Spend for progression, not comfort. Community routes disagree on the exact best weapon path, but agree on skipping cosmetics, gambling, optional minibosses, collection work, and unnecessary boat upgrades. A modest early weapon followed by one strong late weapon is safer than buying and upgrading everything.

Keep enough money for required lures and a small healing reserve. The money guide explains value, but a Bean attempt is not the time for a long farming loop.

Why did Bean fail to unlock?

  • The save was not new, or the run exceeded 60 minutes.
  • The final boss died, but the RHIB ending was not activated in time.
  • Time was lost on optional achievements, casino spins, or repeated shopping.
  • A copied route depended on the pre-1.0.5 Volcano shortcut.
  • A co-op partner held a required trophy or delayed a quest hand-in.

Keep the main 28-achievement checklist separate so the speedrun does not become mixed with post-game cleanup.
